Don Hamburger (Roxy Club, Prague)

Jiří Kadeřábek's Don Hamburger in Czech version, performed by the composer and the Berg Orchestra under the conductor Peter Vrábel, at the Roxy Club, Prague, on November 4, 2010. * * * Jiří Kadeřábek: Don Hamburger (2010) Why so-called great piece of art has to be related to the most important human questions? Is greatness of a piece determined rather by the ideas behind it than the piece itself? How comes that a car or an iron, located at the right place in a gallery of modern art, can provoke more questions and emotions, than a piece of art trying to artistically describe something? How does pop art work? As an example can serve Mozart's operas, often not great at their profound librettos, but yet alive -- thanks to their excellent music. And why not to compose a piece about food in fastfood -- hamburger, fries and cola? Short, light and agile piece, which I have been wishing to compose for a long time already? Preparation for the banquet in the second movement of Don Giovanni is a wonderful starting point for that. English lyrics: Once I came to MacDonald. Did you have nice afternoon? Did you have good and enough food? I had everything I wanted! I can tell you what I had! So what was that? Just wait! I ordered a hamburger. Did you have fries? Of course I did! Why do you eat such a greasy stuff? What you mean? What is the point? I can't tell you anything else than. Than what, tell me! I just love it! Then I went to the bathroom.
